Premier League Pecking Order- Matchweek 21 (Premier League Season 2020/21- In a Nutshell)

The pecking order is based on the performance of the Premier League teams during the given Matchweek; on this occasion, it’s Matchweek 21. No one had the week off, which meant all 20 Premier League teams featured. The Premier League Pecking Order starts with the 20th team (worst performed team) on the Pecking Order and finishes with the 1st team (best performed team) on the Pecking Order.

20- Burnley

Burnley weren’t at the races; it’s as simple as that. They were completely outplayed by Chelsea. That’s despite the fact Burnley defeated Aston Villa recently and should have been full of confidence. It’s fair to say that Burnley will be wanting to prove that their poor display in Matchweek 21 was an aberration.

19- West Ham

West Ham proved that they probably aren’t top four contenders with their Matchweek 21 display. They were thoroughly outplayed by Liverpool. The only positive for West Ham was that they scored a consolation goal through Craig Dawson. In truth they were never in the match and deserved to lose 3-1.

18- Everton

Everton had 60.9% possession, but a lot of it was wasted. They finished with the same number of shots on target as Newcastle United; three. The fact is that Steve Bruce may well have outcoached Carlo Ancelotti. The match proved that no match in the Premier League is easy. Despite the respective teams positions on the Premier League Table, Everton deserved to lose.

17- West Brom

West Brom had just 37.5% possession. The match was controlled by Fulham who had seven shots on target to West Brom’s three. The fact was that West Brom were clinical in the final third. Despite that they didn’t deserve a point in a match that finished 2-all.

16- Crystal Palace

Crystal Palace didn’t play a great match, but they defeated Wolves 1-nil. The fact that they had less possession and just two shots on target says it all. They won the match. It was clear that Wolves were the better team.

15- Sheffield United

Sheffield United defended well to only concede one goal against Manchester City. The fact that Sheffield United only had 25% possession said it all. They parked the bus. It was good they stayed in the match, but unfortunately, they only had one shot on target.

14- Arsenal

Arsenal had just 43.3% possession. Despite that, they had the same number of shots on target than Manchester United, three. That was the only positive to take out of a disappointing display by Arsenal; they have plenty of work to do.

13- Manchester United

Manchester United would be disappointed that they played in a scoreless draw. They would have wanted to make a statement against Arsenal. The fact that Arsenal goalkeeper Bernd Leno was possibly the man of the match says it all. It indicated that Manchester United had the better of the chances to score.

12- Manchester City

Manchester City played an average game of football. That’s despite the fact that they won 1-nil against Sheffield United, 1-nil. They scored early in the piece and then played a different style of football. The fact was that they had 75% of possession, but only had five shots on target. They could have put the match beyond doubt. Instead, they went about passing the ball aimlessly.

11- Wolves

Wolves were the better team from a performance perspective even though they lost 1-nil to Crystal Palace. The fact that Wolves had four shots on target to Crystal Palace’s two told the story. On top of that they had 52.7% possession. When in possession they did well to muster some chances to score. It was a bit of bad luck that they lost to Crystal Palace.

10- Aston Villa

Aston Villa claimed a crucial three points with their 1-nil win over Southampton. The fact was that Aston Villa were clinical in the final third with four shots on target from eight shots. They only had 40.2%, but used the ball well. They will be pleased that they claimed all three points. Putting the result to one side, they need to improve. That’s given the fact Southampton were probably the better team.

9- Fulham

Fulham performed well, despite having a 2-all draw with West Brom. Importantly, Fulham played some good football. The fact they finished with 62.5% possession tells the story. It wasn’t wasted possession; they had seven shots on target and scored twice. Despite being in the relegation zone there would still be pleased with their Matchweek 21 display.

8- Newcastle United

Newcastle United played an intelligent match. They scored two goals from their three shots on target. The fact that Newcastle United had 39.1% possession tells the story. They defended well and played well on the counter attack. The fact was that Callum Wilson was the reason why Newcastle United won. He scored the only two goals of the match. They played a game where they implemented the tactics well.

7- Southampton

Southampton may have lost in Matchweek 21, but they performed extremely well. They controlled the balance of play as well as the tempo of the match against Aston Villa. The fact that Southampton had 59.8% possession tells the story. They didn’t waste the possession; they had 20 shots to Aston Villa’s eight. The fact is Southampton can take plenty of positives out of the match, despite losing.

6- Brighton and Hove Albion

Brighton and Hove Albion have been a different team of recent times. Following a quality display against Tottenham. Despite Tottenham probably just being the better team, Brighton and Hove Albion won! Normally Brighton and Hove Albion play fantastic football, but leave without a point. They need to prove their win in Matchweek 21 wasn’t an aberration.

5- Tottenham

Tottenham played some good football. They were just unfortunate that Brighton and Hove Albion scored the only goal of the match. The fact that Tottenham had 56.8% possession and four shots on target from eight shots were important. The reason being is that it showed they were efficient when in possession.

4- Leicester City

Leicester City put in a decent performance. They just came up against a Leeds United team that played some exceptional football. The fact was that Leicester had 18 shots to Leeds United’s eight. The fact was that Leicester City weren’t clinical enough in the final third as they scored just one goal.

3- Liverpool

Liverpool controlled the balance of play and the tempo of the match against West Ham. The fact that Liverpool had five shots on target to West Ham’s two told the story. The fact was that they scored from three of the five shots they had on target. They had a total of 67.2% possession, which they didn’t waste.

2- Leeds United

Leeds United claimed a gritty win against a Leicester City team trying to prove that they are contenders. The difference between the two teams was Patrick Bamford who was involved in all three goals Leeds United scored. It was a typical Leeds United display; they don’t stop attacking. They deservedly won 3-1 against Leicester City.

1- Chelsea

Chelsea played some incredible football against a Burnley team that weren’t at the races. The fact that Chelsea had 19 shots to Burnley’s one sums up Chelsea’s dominance. They had 71.1% possession and moved the ball exquisitely. They are a different team to the one earlier this Season. The football that they played in Matchweek 21 was unbelievable.

Premier League Pecking Order- Matchweek 21 (Premier League Season 2020/21- Final Thoughts)

It was an unpredictable Matchweek 21 of football in the Premier League. That can be substantiated in the Pecking Order. There were three draws in ten matches. There were 20 goals scored in ten matches. Three of the top five teams in the top five of the Pecking Order in Matchweek 21 won. It was a tough exercise, ranking the teams by the manner in which they performed. Nevertheless, it was enjoyable, as judging football performance isn’t an exact science.
